PCB Regime Change Operation

Regime change is the change in the leadership of a country or department through the use of force. Something similar happened recently in the Pakistan Cricket Board. The ex-chairman of the PCB, Ramiz Raja, has been sacked by the PM of Pakistan, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif. Mr. Najam Sethi has been appointed as the new chairman of the PCB.

The Controversy:

The question is: why has this appointment become so controversial? The answer to this question is not that simple. There are multiple reasons behind all the noise that started after this appointment. We will look into some of those reasons.

Change in the Political Leadership of the Country:

We have seen this multiple times in the past. With the change in the government in Pakistan, the heads of almost all the departments under the previous government were replaced by the new government. Maybe that just makes the new government feel better. One thing that is common in all these examples is that these decisions are always criticised by the opposition and their supporters.

The Reward:

People have a common perception, and it is correct, that these appointments are frequently rewarded by governments to those who support their narrative. This appointment of Mr. Najam Sethi is also being labelled as his reward for supporting a certain narrative in the media. The previous chairman of PCB was also criticised for this tilt towards the government and its narrative at that time.

Is Everyone Against This Appointment?

No! Everyone in the country is not against this appointment. Some even think that this is a great appointment.

Najam Sethi, The Man:

Najam Sethi is a journalist, businessman, former caretaker federal minister of Pakistan, caretaker chief minister of Punjab, and former PCB chairman. He is 74 years old.

Previously, Najam Sethi has been impressive as Chairman of PCB. He played a big role in bringing PSL back to Pakistan.

Aim:

Well, after his first few days in office as Chairman of PCB, it is quite clear that he wants a completely new setup in PCB. He has announced plans to restore departmental cricket in Pakistan. He has fired a lot of members of PCB, including the chief selector, Muhammad Wasim. An interim selection committee has been formed, with former captain Shahid Afridi serving as team Pakistan’s interim chief selector.A foreign head coach is expected to take charge of the Pakistan team. He has also promised to bring PSL 8 to cities such as Quetta, which previously did not host the tournament.

Thought:

PCB should have an independent system of appointing its chairman, or at least the person appointed as chairman of PCB should complete his tenure regardless of the change in government. Such insecurity cannot be tolerated in Pakistan cricket.
