On Monday, January 30, 2023, there was a suicide bomb blast in a Mosque in Peshawar Police Lines. The attack has resulted in at least 100 deaths so far (according to hospital officials).
The incident took place during the Namaz-e-Zohar (afternoon prayers). The mosque has a capacity of 300+ people. According to the officials, there were between 300 to 400 people in the mosque at the time of the blast.
Siddique Khan, a police official, said the attacker blew himself up while among the worshippers. Authorities said more than 90 percent of the casualties were police officials.
The mosque is within Peshawar’s Police Lines, an area that is part of the city’s red zone where several government buildings, including the Chief Minister House, Governor House, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly building are present.
The suicide bomber was reportedly sitting in the mosque’s front row. He blew himself moments after the prayers started.
The rescue operation continued for several hours. The survivors as well as the dead were pulled out of the debris.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
Sarbakaf Mohmand, a commander for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, initially claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter.
But hours later, TTP spokesperson Mohammad Khurasani denied taking the responsibility for the attack, saying it was not their policy to target mosques, seminaries, and religious places. He did not address why a TTP commander had claimed responsibility for the attack earlier.
Several people from across the globe condemned the heinous attack on the mosque in Peshawar. From within Pakistan, all the political leaders, COAS, celebrities, and athletes condemned this terrorist attack. Many political leaders as well as public personalities from around the globe condemned this attack and expressed solidarity with the victims.
The Namaz-e-Janaza of some of the martyrs of the Peshawar attack was offered last night.
The wave of terrorism is rising in Pakistan unfortunately. Action should be taken as soon as possible against this wave. We do not want to see Pakistan going 10-15 years back. Pakistan has already lost more than enough lives in the war against terrorism. We can’t afford to lose any more lives in this war.
The terrorism must end! The targeting of Pakistani people must end!
